Amalia Ulman
Contemporary photography is full of projects and practices that draw heavily on the
experiences and present lives of its makers. Amalia Ulman draws us sharply to the mirror-
window analogy of photography through her investigation of selfie culture. Ulman’s project
Excellences and Perfections was published through Instagram during five months in 2015.
The project is a fictional autobiography of a young socialite or influencer who moved from
afamiliar with across social media. The series has an allegorical, perhaps William Hogarth-like
narrative, tracing her supposed ‘life’ apparently living a dream of comfort and excess,
followed by an emotional crash, and finally rising from the flames with a new love interest
and health and wellbeing regime to match. By the end of the project, Ulman had acquired
89,000 followers that comprised those who understood the conceit of the project, but many
more ‘non-specialist’ viewers, who believed they were witnessing the genuine melodrama
unfold (SOUTER, 2018: 103).
Actual and metaphorical mirrors are an important part of Ulman’s project, as well as the
selfie image more broadly. With every selfie, the smartphone lens and screen substitutes
the traditional kind of mirror that artists have normally employed to make self-portraits.
When a wider, three-quarter length portrait is required, the camera is reversed and selfies
are shot with the aid of a mirror, the lens capturing the reflection of the maker’s reflected
image. This sequence of perspectives, or gazes, is usually betrayed when we can see the
eyes of the maker focused on their smartphone’s screen, rather than connecting with the
gaze of the viewer.
